These few days in Berlin must be a lot of fun.

This weekend, while attending a birthday dinner, I observed that two different boyfriends-of-dancing-girls were sporting a distinctly similar look. There must be some kind of underground dude magazine that has announced if you want to date a belly dancer, you should be a dark haired guy willing to grow whiskers that make you looke like a cross between a nineteenth century industrialist and an Orthodox Jew.

Also, what do you do if you are a guy and another guy shows up somewhere with your exact same look? If it can happen at a birthday party, surely it must happen all the time at indie rock shows. Is this as embarrassing as if two girls show up somewhere in the same outfit? Or is it more like some type of uniform that indicates you belong to a certain tribe of men? Weird. Clearly, I do not understand the look of dudes.

In related news, it is not a good idea to make a joke about neti pots at a party. There is just no way to know how many people in the room will turn out to take neti pots very seriously.

Took me a couple of days, but I finally broke the 11K mark. GOD, so that's what giving birth feels like. I want to tie my tubes!

Still behind about 3,900 words. That's roughly 15 or so pages double-spaced.

God, I think I have twins...

I don't want to post a word count just yet. I have a couple of hours of prime wakey time to write and I will spend it trying to get caught up.

The characters are all there. The place is sound and I have removed the ball and chain of research from my process for now.

But they stare at me, these beings, these people I have cast from word and imagination. They stand and sit around the bar, lookin at me, cigarette smoke curling around them, blinking, saying nothing. They are waiting for me to tell them what to do next, where to go, what to say. I do not actually know these people, so I cannot put the words in their mouths, so I stare back at them. Being in a staring contest with people who don't actually have to blink is frustrating. I know I'll lose, but I keep staring back at them.

Talk to me, Joonie's. Talk to me.

Nov. 8th, 2009 @ 10:54 am just. wow.
Current Mood: enthralled
i'm completely full & exhausted from this weekend's marathon festival.
the schedule was challenging (i already know some changes likely to be made).
late nights, early flights, shuttling day gigs to evening & then the whole of yeaterday, from an ungodly 9am
until well beyond 9pm. 8 poets can be aloooooong show, and i know it was a little too long for a few, but a lot more people hung around for the second half than at a usual event. to me, it all went by at a pretty quick pace.
because it was a "that just happened!" evening.

it may have been the best show i've ever hosted, though it's hard to rank these things considering the diversity of some of the favorite ones.hierarchies aren't really my thing anyway.

but WOW. i loved the range. i think there was something for everyone.or multiple somethings for everyone.
GREAT AUDIENCE

i remembered at some point in the afternoon that a majority of my best shows rely on the extra adrenaline of pushing on through some kind of fatigue.it was an easy sell to be great---i mean, marty, jamie, regie cabico, theresa, ami,jt, kit, joanna hoffman--REALLY?! all in ONE PLACE?

OHMYG-D.
(in my monring afterness, i really hate that we didn't have a videographer.some of the best sh* doesn't get recorded).

the how.

i can't even describe what everyone did or the how.just think of regie cabico, wearing a bright green bow around his head  from the chocolate box he used in an earlier piece.picture jamie doing his janis best, excoriating with beauty of precision in language, his first major cheating-without-knowing-experience.picture jt bullock pulling out a comb on his freddy mercury 'stache, theresa both holding down local rep,& doing "octomom" to the hilt.joanna hoffman finally releasing the piece it took 9 years to write about coming out, or the persona poem of a holocaust "survivor" from within a nursing home, ami's declaration for sisterly respect "it's ideology, not biology," kit yan calling bs on gender or describing the recycling of plastic he grew up with,
and  marty....marty casting drag queen spells---but also how in this room "we become verb" which was, really, the whole evening in a phrase.

i mean. damn.
i heard more pieces from everyone than i ever have had the chance to hear and  i am full.
we are so very very very very fortunate to have had that moment, the challenges, the all of it.

right down to the last-night-hook-up attempts (and one success) & convenience store hysteria
which I KNOW made the behind-the-counter-guy's evening, laughing with & at us.

more than a few people suggested we should do a road version of what just happened.i wish.

well look what wishing can do.sometimes, they do come true.

jamie literally fell asleep while we were talking about at least setting up a retreat of some kind, with regie going on as a kind of couch side idea factory.

but before that...
i should be sleeping, but now my house is empty and i just can't.
not quite yet.

Word count as of 1:45 pm: 10,088.

That puts me just over what I was supposed to have at the end of yesterday. So I'm still a day behind...1600 words, give or take.

Fortuntaely, I'm in a good place in a good story. And the reading-when-not-writing drills have been really helpful. What I'm writing seems more in line with the kind of stuff I like in terms of tools (not content), so I feel less like an islander.

Enough procrastinating. Maybe I'll write and watch the OSU game. That sounds relazing.

I blew much of the day wondering how to get out of the current writing hole besides procrastinating my way through it.

Breakthrough! When in doubt, kill someone.

Also: Bill Cosby's "Martin's Funeral" is the best song in the world to write to for long periods of time. Repeat, write, repeat.

Word count later. Right now I have to set about killing someone and making someone else pay.

Nov. 6th, 2009 @ 10:49 am Prompt
Write about being one of the by-standers at some historical, biblical, mythical, or otherwise well-known event. There's famous poem somewhere (I'm not going to look it up right now, I'm posting a prompt right now) about the other people in the Bruegel painting about the fall of Icarus. Another example would be a poem from the perspective of Jesus' donkey (this example is from a poem I heard delivered by a runner up (runner up!!!) in a high school poetry competition -- what made the judges choose the footprints-in-the-snow over Jesus' donkey, still baffles me).

ANYWAY -- be the midwife when Penelope gave birth to Odysseus' son or the goose that did not lay the golden egg.

Here's mine: a haiku from a person writing a thank you note to the bride at the wedding at Cana.

Lovely dress. We wish
you great joy. What was the name
of that wine you served?

Nov. 5th, 2009 @ 01:15 pm LiveJournal Major Notes: Spam counter-attack, RSS feeds again, CSI Deadly Intent contest

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

Ed Plunkett kind of nails it here on the new poet:

...but he leaves out how good everyone was last night.  We had an awesome time.  We talked about water weights and poetry props and someone got some keys thrown at them, which meant Tyrone was back in full effect.  Marshall rocked a Cohen piece ("Oh yeah: I changed some of the words.").  I had my hearing back and that had me pumped up anyway.  Awesome night.  Funniest show we've had in a long time, and I think we said that about last week's show.

What you know about that Block, son?

Day 4 (so far.  It's only 12:31 AM) = 6,340.

It's only been day 4 for 31 minutes so I'm behind a couple hundred words, but have the next 23 hours to compensate.

I've been staying up very late.  I say I'm going to write but I end up messing around a lot in the lab and then writing a few lines and conking out at the computer, waking up at 1, then staying up for two more hours.  Not getting much writing done during the day at all.  Kind of bumming a little this year, and fall isn't doing much to change that, which is unfortunate, and all this wanderlust is slowing me down creatively.  Fall is usually a great elixir, but it's been a long year.

Write on!

My favorite line today so far:

They let their resilience do the talking, have conversations with things that only talk back in records and guitar riffs and take quarters for their trouble.

Nov. 3rd, 2009 @ 09:39 am Prompt
The prompt is the have a poem in which someone's job (or maybe your job) is to repeat back what anyone says. Kind of like using echolalia (except of course that is a job, not part of a larger disorder like schizophrenia -- this is not to be a poem about schizophrenia!).

It would work like this:
Someone says, "Should I keep my job."
You say, "Should I keep my job."
Someone says, "I know it's a mistake."
You say, "It's a mistake."

Okay, I have to point out that OneNote - a program I had no interest in messing with when I added 2007 programs to this computer - is really kind of awesome. I just added music to a text scrapbook in a folder of novel ideas that I can now compliment with images and moveable text if I want.

AWESOME.
